It is a calculated risk though, so it goes without saying that tours in wintry and cold conditions in remote mountain areas demand a great deal of careful preparation.

There will no one be around when problems arise, and you’ll lack the often very much needed morale support from your fellow hikers.

Socializing, making friends and finding great comradery was and of course still is for me the most enjoyable aspect of any several-day outdoor adventure in a high altitude mountain area.

One such small adventure that offers just that is hiking across the Low Tatras main ridge in Slovakia, even in fine weather a challenging mountain tour that usually takes up five days.

The Günther-Messner-Steig in South Tyrol

Günther Messner was a twenty-four year old mountaineer from Villnöß, South Tyrol (German: Südtirol), who perished in the Himalaya mountain range more than five decades ago.

He was a younger brother of Reinhold Messner, who himself had been involved in the events leading to his brother’s disappearance at the merciless Nanga Parba mountain in June 1970.
